Summer Jobs

I had a job as a busgirl at a restaurant when I turned 14.  I jumped over to McDonalds when I turned 16. Here’s a list of the strange summer jobs of famous people.  What was your first job?

1. Orlando Bloom’s first job was working at a skeet shooting range as a clay pigeon trapper when he was just 13.

2. Beyonce Knowles’ mother owned a salon when the future pop star was growing up, so the aspiring singer picked up some extra cash by sweeping up hair.

3. As a teenager Mick Jagger worked as an ice cream salesman. After entering the London School of Economics, Jagger also worked as a porter at a mental hospital.

4. Jagger wasn’t the only member of the band to have a gig before the Stones. Keith Richards worked as a ball boy at a tennis club.

5. It’s tough to envision Colin Powell as anything other than a general or diplomat, but when he was growing up in the Bronx, he worked in a baby furniture store. Powell even picked up a bit of Yiddish on the job since that was the preferred language of his employers.

6. Warren Buffett had cash going through his hands even as a young man; his first job was at his grandfather’s grocery store, although he eventually worked his way up to a gig at J.C. Penney.

7. NFL running back Edgerrin James had a particularly grueling summer job as a kid: he worked 16-hour days loading watermelons into a truck near his Florida home to save up the cash to buy his first car.

amy-adams.jpg8. Actress Amy Adams needed cash to buy a car after high school, so she spent two months working as a Hooters girl.

9. Of course, some early jobs predict the future rather well. Before rising to prominence with Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne worked in a slaughterhouse.

10. As a young man, Matthew McConaughey wanted to get away from Texas for a while, so he spent a year in Australia. To support himself, he took on a number of jobs, including one that involved shoveling chicken manure.

11. When country star Clint Black was 14, he got a job selling newspaper subscriptions door-to-door in Houston.

12. Gwen Stefani earned some cash in her early days mopping floors at a local Dairy Queen.

13. Rod Stewart had a number of jobs before his music career took off, but gravedigger was undoubtedly the creepiest.

14. Need a rat catcher? Call Warren Beatty. He caught rodents to pay the bills before hitting it big.

15. Jimmy Stewart was a man of many talents, from acting to being an Air Force general. As a young man, though, he had a job painting the lines on roads and also spent two summers as a magician’s assistant.

16. James Brown had a number of jobs before he became the Godfather of Soul, including one in which he racked balls at a poolhall.

17. You never know how a weird job might pay off. Singer Chubby Checker had a job as a chicken plucker at Fresh Farm Poultry in Philly. His boss would let Checker sing to entertain the customers. When the boss realized just how talented his chicken plucker was, he arranged for Checker to have a recording session with Dick Clark.

bill-cosby.jpg18. Bill Cosby played four sports in high school, but he still found time to sell produce, shine shoes, and work as a stock boy at a supermarket.

19. Tom Cruise’s family moved around a lot when he was young, but during one stint in Louisville he picked up some extra cash as a paperboy.

20. Ed McMahon knew his voice was going to be valuable early on. As a teenager he worked as a carnival barker and a bingo caller, and he later put himself through college working as a pitchman for vegetable slicers on the boardwalk in Atlantic City.

21. Bill Murray never worked as a greenskeeper, but he did have an interesting job selling chestnuts outside of a grocery store.

22. Brad Pitt did all sorts of things to earn a buck while he tried to start his acting career, including dressing as a giant chicken to promote an el Pollo Loco restaurant.

23. When Christopher Walken was a kid, he joined the circus.  He took an unpaid job with a small act and even did a little lion taming, although he later claimed the lion was very old and “really more like a dog.”

Do you believe in the Power of the Mind?

Nick Cannon believes in the power of the mind.  That’s how he pulled Mariah Carey and DJed for Obama’s Inaugural Ball.

Do you believe in the Power of the Mind?  Do you think we can literally think things into existence?  I think the power of our thoughts is amazing and there is something to manifestation.  Maybe we’ll all figure out this power one day!  😉

PooTrap!

The days of picking up your dog’s poop are over!! LMAO!

Elephant Nest

I was taking my dog out for a run this morning.  She started barking up at a tree.  I look up and found this.  Strange.

Largest PENIS in the WORLD!!

Despite the huge size of penises in elephants and odd hoofed mammals (like rhinos and horses), the biggest penis belongs to the biggest animal: the blue whale. The largest measured penis reached 8 feet!

But don’t let that discourage you!  It’s not always about size.  In some African countries, saying that one is ‘hung like a gorilla’ is considered an insult.

A bad dream . . .

I think I watched every episode of “Full House” as a kid.  I don’t recall this ending …

$45 Million A Year!!

American Idol does not take care of their people!  I mean, come on… they ONLY gave Simon Cowell a $45 million a year bump in salary!  No wonder Paula left!  Here’s some info I read on JV’s blog:

“American Idol” wouldn’t pay PAULA ABDUL the $10 million a year she wanted … but here’s how much they value SIMON COWELL: They’re in final negotiations to bump his salary up to $45 million. A YEAR. (!!!)

—Seriously. Simon WAS making a mere $36 million a year. The new deal keeps him in the judge’s seat for two seasons past the one they just started filming … which premieres in January.

—Yes, that seems like a RIDICULOUS amount to pay someone. But keep in mind that “Idol” took in $850 million in ad revenue last year.

—RYAN SEACREST just signed a $45 million deal, but it stretches over three years.

(—Is one person worth $45 million a year … even on a show that’s raking in $850 million???)

(—I guess the bigger question is, could “American Idol” survive and still be the RATINGS MONSTER that it is, WITHOUT Simon)

My hero!

This kid plays Guitar Hero while solving two Rubik’s Cubes… my hero!  😛

Don’t get caught smoking or clogging up the toilet!

I read about a Malaysian teacher who forced his student to smoke 42 cigarettes in two hours, four in his mouth at a time, as punishment for smoking. Another teacher made almost 140 teenage girls squat in a pond at a boarding school as punishment for clogging the toilets. Not sure if that is the best way to handle things, but I guess it is one way to get a kid not to smoke or clog up the toilet! ..LOL..

What’s the most extreme way you were punished growing up?

Save Water? …Pee in the shower!?!

In Brazil, it’s encouraged to pee in the shower in order to save water! Don’t believe me … watch this TV commercial.  I always thought water from the shower gets recycled.  I know it’s supposedly getting purified, but … YUCK!

Save England’s Ugliest Dog!

I read this article on MailOnline.  It made me so sad.  Some things in life just aren’t fair.  Why do things like this happen to such innocent beings?

E.T. find home? RSPCA struggles to find new owner for Britain’s ugliest mutt

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

With the head of a meerkat and the body of a spotted piglet, ET the dog would come last in any beauty contest.

And sadly for him, he fares equally badly in the popularity stakes.

For the last three months he has been ignored by visitors to the kennels which took over his care after his elderly owner was unable to cope with him.

Yet staff say he has a delightful personality and would make someone a perfect pet.

Please take me home: ET the Mexican hairless dog has been stuck at Hillside Kennels in Waltham Abbey, Essex, for months

‘Normally it only takes a few weeks to find a dog a new home but no one wants ET,’ said Dawn Fields, head kennelmaid at the Hillside Boarding and Rescue Centre in Waltham Abbey, Essex.

‘I think it’s purely because of his looks. We put him in the first kennel people see as they come in but they hurry on past him.

‘Then we put him in the last kennel but nothing seems to help. I can’t understand it – he’s so ugly he’s adorable.’

Four-year-old ET, named for his resemblance to the Spielberg movie alien, is one of only 27 Mexican Hairless dogs in the UK. Miss Fields said: ‘I think his owner obviously had a sense of humour with his name, it suits him though.

Mutt ugly? But E.T.’s genetic baldness is a positive advantage for people who hate vacuuming and RSPCA staff say he has a fantastic personality

‘When he stands up and his head pops up he looks just like a meerkat. He’s got a hairy face and a mowhawk down the back of his head and stops at his shoulders.

‘The other dogs don’t take much notice of him, I think he probably looks at them and thinks they are really ugly.

‘He’s absolutely fantastic – he’s got such a nice temperament which is one of the reasons we are so surprised he hasn’t been snapped up yet.

‘He gets on with anybody and everybody, he loves going for walks and playing with a ball.
‘He got on with the previous owner’s grandchildren and other dogs. He’s very easy to look after – he just needs a little bit of suntan lotion in the summer to stop him getting burned and a jumper or a coat in the colder weather but you won’t have to spend hours hoovering up his hairs as he doesn’t moult.’

Bill Clinton is a PIMP!

The two journalists pardoned and released yesterday by North Korea, in part due to the diplomatic efforts of former President Bill Clinton, arrived home yesterday afternoon, their plane touching down at the Burbank Airport, near Los Angeles.  Euna Lee and Laura Lingenjoyed a heartfelt welcome home from their families and friends. In a brief press conference held on the tarmac, Ling expressed her joy at seeing Clinton after being told they were being set free. “We feared that at any moment we could be sent to a hard labor camp,” she said, “and then suddenly we were told that we were going to a meeting. When we walked through the doors, we saw standing before us President Bill Clinton. We were shocked, but we knew instantly in our hearts that the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to an end.” President Obama, who, as was revealed later in the day was fully briefed on Clinton’s trip, thanked the former president for his help, saying, “We are obviously extraordinarily relieved” and “very pleased with the outcome.”

Meanwhile, it was also revealed that billionaire entertainment tycoon Steve Bingnot only lent Clinton his private plane – he will also pick up the $200,000 tab for the entire trip. Bing, owner of Shangri-La Entertainment, is also known for fathering a child with model/actress Elizabeth Hurley.

Organic food has no health benefits, study finds

I found this article at TimesOnline the other day.  I found it interesting so I copied the entire thing. What do you think about this?

Organic food gives no health benefits to consumers, according to research for the Food Standards Agency published today.

Shoppers pay more for organic fruit, vegetables, chicken, beef and milk but the food gives no nutritional enhancement to people’s diet.

The watchdog stopped short of advising consumers that buying organic produce was a waste of money but its message was clear: choosing to eat organic food will make no important difference to a person’s overall health. Eating a healthy balanced diet is the only important thing, the report concluded.

The research — the first and biggest study undertaken of scientific papers published in the past 50 years on the health and diet benefits of organic food — will come as a blow to the organic food industry, which is now worth £2.1 billion a year in Britain..

The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, also threatens to put the FSA on a collision course with organic champions such as the Soil Association.

The £120,000 year-long study by a team from the London School for Hygiene and Tropical health was headed by Dr Alan Dangour, a public health nutritionist. His team identified some differences between organic and conventionally produced food but concluded that they were not sufficiently important to make any difference to a person’s health or give nutritional benefit.

Dr Dangour said: “There is more phosphorus in organic food. Phosphorus is an important mineral but it is available in everything we eat and is not important for public health. Acidity is also higher in organic produce but acidity is about taste and sensory perception and makes no difference at all for health.

“A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced crops and livestock but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance.

“Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally-produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority.”

He made clear, however, that he had not looked at pesticide and herbicide residues in food produced by organic and conventional farming methods. The study also did not seek to compare the taste of the products.

The FSA insisted that it was neither pro nor anti-organic food and it recognised that there were many other reasons why people chose to eat organic — such as concern for the environment and wildlife, higher animal welfare standards and stricter rules on use of antibiotic medicines in animals and pesticides on crops.

Gill Fine, the agency’s director of consumer choice and dietary health, said: “Ensuring people have accurate information is absolutely essential in allowing us all to make informed choices about the food we eat.

“This study does not mean that people should not eat organic food. What it shows is that there is little, if any, nutritional difference between organic and conventionally-produced food and that there is no evidence of additional health benefits from eating organic food.”

Peter Melchett, policy director at the Soil Association, admitted that he was disappointed by the conclusions but said that he was confident that consumers would make their own minds up.

“The FSA has always sated there was no scientific evidence to show organic food was better for health than conventional food. But it has not stopped the growth of the market. Some 8 per cent of shoppers are regular users of organic food and they do so for a variety of reasons. As far as FSA advice is concerned people tend to use their own common sense.”

He was adamant that five-year research work funded by the European Commission and due to be published next year would show that organic food was beneficial to health.

He also challenged the conclusion by the researchers that the nutritional differences found in organic and conventional foods were not important.

“Consumers will decide for themselves,” he said.
